Electives Offered in 2009

The main subject in your Bachelor degree is the one you choose as your major. But you also have plenty of elective papers to choose from. The topics listed on this page will help you choose electives in coherent fields of study which are particular strengths in our School. Postgraduate students are invited to browse our School research page to find out about higher level courses and thesis supervision options.

Pasifika Studies

The Pacific is an increasingly important region, about which many people know very little. It is the largest ocean on the globe and contains some of the world’s smallest, most populous, newest, and most volatile states. These Pacific states are our closest neighbours, the source of growing numbers of immigrants to New Zealand, and home to declining numbers of permanent residents.

Pacific people will make up some 20% of this country’s population by 2050, and will play an important role in New Zealand’s social and economic future. The Pacific region is increasingly significant for New Zealand trade, development assistance and foreign policy and will become increasingly significant with re-alignments in global geopolitics.
