Pasifika Studies
The Pacific is an increasingly important region, about which many people know very little. It is the largest ocean on the globe and contains some of the world’s smallest, most populous, newest, and most volatile states. These Pacific states are our closest neighbours, the source of growing numbers of immigrants to New Zealand, and home to declining numbers of permanent residents.
Pacific people will make up some 20% of this country’s population by 2050, and will play an important role in New Zealand’s social and economic future. The Pacific region is increasingly significant for New Zealand trade, development assistance and foreign policy and will become increasingly significant with re-alignments in global geopolitics.
