Postgraduate study is strongly represented in the School of Social and Cultural Studies. Honours, Masters, and Doctoral degrees are available in English, Media Studies, Sociology, Public Policy, Social Policy, Social Anthropology, and History.

Postgraduate Diplomas and Degrees

Not all the regulations on the structure of the different degrees and diplomas are listed here. Full details are available in the Massey Calendar, or in the Albany Campus Postgraduate Booklet. These booklets are available from Massey Contact in Quad Block A, Albany Campus (ph. 0800-MASSEY).

Graduate Diploma in Arts (GradDipArts)

The Graduate Diploma in Arts is designed for those who already have a degree in arts or a similar subject, and want to complete a major in a new subject. You may wish to update your knowledge of a subject, or earn the equivalent of a major in a new subject, with a view to pursuing postgraduate study in that subject. The GradDipArts consists of eight papers (120 credits) in 200 and 300 level papers. The papers on offer for this year can be found in the School's undergraduate booklet. A blend of internal and extramural subjects can be taken.

Postgraduate Certificate in Arts (PGradCertArts)

This Certificate is for those who already have a degree in arts and want to complete two papers at postgraduate level, perhaps to try out the higher level of study. The Certificate can be upgraded to a Diploma. The PGradCertArts consists of two papers (60 credits) at 700 level.

PostGraduate Diploma of Arts (PGDipArts)

The PostGraduate Diploma of Arts consists of papers and research papers to the value of 120 credits at 700 level. Normally this Diploma is taken by those who do not have a major in that subject and therefore cannot take the Honours degree course. There is no time limit for a PGDipArts, so it particularly suits part-time students.

Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BAHons)

The Bachelor of Arts with Honours is taken by those who have a BA with a major or the equivalent of a major in the subject they enrol for. It consists of 120 credits (one full time year of study) at 700 level. An honours degree gives a class of award and a named subject and is therefore highly regarded.

Master of Arts (MA)

The Master of Arts at Massey consists of the work for the BA Hons in a subject plus research work (often but not exclusively by a 120 creidt thesis) so that the student has the equivalent of 2 years (240 credits) of study at 700 and 800 level.

Offered in the subjects of English, History, Media Studies, Social Anthropology, Social Policy, Sociology.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

The Master of Philosophy at Massey is taken by those who want the equivalent of the MA but do not have the formal requirements for entry in their chosen subject. Usually it consists of the MA regulations for the subject, although other regulations can be substituted in specific cases.

Master of Public Policy (MPP)

The Master of Public Policy is a multi-disciplinary degree for those involved or with an interest in public sector management. It requires 240 credits of papers.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The Doctor of Philosophy Degree consists of a thesis at the highest level of scholarship, based on original research. Proposals to be admitted to doctoral studies require the approval of the Doctoral Research Committee, and a booklet outlines the regulations for undertaking this degree, and is available on request. Contact the Head of School, Assoc. Prof.Peter Lineham .

Graduate Life

Graduate Research Fund (GRF)

If you are enrolled in a research-only paper (research essay/exercise or thesis), you can apply to a small pool of money administered by the School for research expenses. Typical costs include small items of equipment, equipment hire, consumables, and travel. Applications are due on 20 April each year, and a copy of the form can be obtained by clicking on the links under "Quick Links and Online Forms" at the top of this page, or from the Reception area, Atrium Level 2. PhD students may apply to a second round on 15 August.

Study Space

Study space and lockers are located in Atrium 3.48 (for students spending a considerable amount of time on campus). Swipe cards and keys can be obtained from the cashier at Massey Contact in Quad A for a non-refundable fee.

Computing Facilities

24-hour postgraduate computing facilities are located in Quad B Lab 1 (Main precinct, off gate 1) and in Building 7 (Oteha Rohe, off gate 4). Access cards need to be purchased from the cashier in Quad A, ground level, for a non-refundable charge of $12. Computers can also be accessed from 8:30-6:00 pm on weekdays in Atrium LL2.

E-mail is also available for a charge; contact the lab supervisor on duty, or Information Technology Services, located on the ground floor of the Study Centre (ext. 9478).

Student Learning Centre

The Student Learning Centre at Albany offers one-to-one learning support and workshops on time management, research methods, and thesis writing.

Staff-Student Seminars

Students are warmly encouraged to present an informal paper at our regular staff-student seminars, Wednesdays at 4 pm.

Digital Commons

The digital commons is a repository for research by Massey staff and students. Documents, including theses, are stored online and available for full-text searching and downloading.

Students who graduated in any year are welcome to submit their thesis to the site. Students enrolling after 1 January 2007 will be required to provide an electronic copy for uploading. This is an excellent way to make your contribution to knowledge globally accessible!
